A Road Map to Critical Goals

As a first step toward creating a comprehensive international research road map, we have envisioned five integral spokes in HITEC, each pointing to a 5-year demonstration milestone that paves the way for critical 10-year goals.

Alternative Fuels

10-Year Goal

Produce 10 billion gallons of gasoline-equivalent biofuels annually; achieve a 10% market penetration with low-carbon alternative fuels so that CO2 emissions are reduced by 5%.

Key Action

Leverage expertise in the conversion of biomass into biofuels using catalysis, thermochemistry, and computational modeling; develop processes to capture and reenergize CO2 to create new fuels and by-products.

10-Year Goal

Improve engine efficiency of production passenger vehicles by an average of 35%.

Key Action

Initiate cooperation among engine manufacturers, fuel producers, and the R&D community to undertake work that spans the spectrum from fundamental research to applied science and demonstration, resulting in commercially viable products.

10-Year Goal

Begin production of 5-passenger, plug-in hybrid vehicles with a 100-mile, all-electric range, resulting in a 10% decrease in CO2-equivalent emissions across the transportation fleet.

Key Action

Create synergy among scientists, engineers, and industry partners to discover the path most likely to evolve today's hybrids into practical, fully electric vehicles.
